We have become very particular about the pigs we breed. After our pigs reached their adult size, we could really see a difference in sizes! The pigs that we paid a lot of money for turned out to be the best size. I guess a lot of times, you really do get what you pay for! Tuney & Daphne & their offspring are now our line. Tuney reached adulthood weighing 60 lbs. Daphne weighs 45 lbs. This will be reflected in the price of our line!
PB pigs continue to grow until they are 4 years old. They can get so fat that their eyes swell shut- that is not healthy for them. They don't have very good eyesight and seem to startle easily until they are used to a routine. When they are picked up, they feel safer with their feet resting against something, such as your chest or arms. It takes almost 4 months of pregnancy to have a litter. Females should not be bred until at least a year of age, but they come into their cycle before then. Therefore, the males and females should be separated until breeding age.
PB pigs LOVE to have their bellies rubbed! When my pigs were young, and I would scratch on them, they would flop onto their side so I could scratch their belly. I see them in the field scratching each other's bellies with the other's nose still today. PB pigs are covered in bristly hair and have thick skin.
PB pigs do like mud baths. It protects their skin from the sun and it helps to keep them cool. On the hot days when I water my pigs, I always fill up their mud bath so they can get some relief.
To make the best pets, PB pigs should be spayed or neutered.
PB pigs can be potty trained, and I hear they make good house pets... but I keep mine outside.
